The skin Flashcards
What are the 3 main layers of the skin?
Epidermis
Dermis
Subcutaneous Layer
What are the 5 layers of the epidermis?
Corneum Lucidum Granulosum Spinosum Germinativum
Give alternative names for the 5 layers of the epidermis.
Horny Lucid Granular Prickle Basal
What are the 7 functions of the skin?
Sensation Heat Regulation Absorption Protection Excretion Secretion Vitamin D production
Describe the growth pattern of the epidermis.
Cell division happens in the germinativum and slowly cells deteriorate as they rise through the layers. As they get to the granulosum cells nucleus break down and eventually become dry, flat and lost at the corneum. This takes about 4 weeks.
What are the 2 layers of the dermis?
Lower Reticular & Upper Pappillary
What would you find in the reticular layer?
Network of collagen and elastin fibres
What would you find in the papillary layer?
Nerve endings and blood capillaries
Name 4 skin appendages
hair, nails, sweat glands and sebaceous glands.
Name 2 sudoriferous glands and where you would find them.
Both in the dermis
Eccrine - everywhere
Appocrine - adult areas
What is the process of skin shedding from the stratum corneum called?
Desquamation
Where do you find melanocyes?
Stratum Germinativum
What areFfibroblasts responsible for?
Production of Collagen and Elastin in the Reticular layer
What cells burst to release histamines?
Mast cells
Where does cell mitosis take place?
Stratum Germinativum
