Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What are the 2 main functions of blood?
1) Transportation
2) Protection
What does the blood transport?
Oxygen, hormones, enzymes.
What do the erythrocytes (Red blood cells) transport?
Oxygen from the lungs to body cells
Carbon dioxide from cells back to the lungs
What do Leukocytes (white blood cells) do?
Protect the body against invasion of micro organisms and toxins
produce antibodies & antitoxins
What are the 4 main components of blood?
Red blood cells (erythrocytes)
White blood cells (leukocytes)
Plasma
Platelets (thrombocytes)
Name the 3 types of blood vessels
Veins, Arteries and capillaries
What is an artery?
Thick walled vessel, that carries oxygenated blood away from the heart and around the body, the blood flow is fast.
made up of elastic connective tissue.
What is a vein?
Thin walled vessel that contains valves to prevent back flow. The veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
Made up of connective tissue.
What is a capillary?
A capillary is the smallest blood vessels and they are the vessels which provide organs with oxygen from the arteries then pick up the deoxygenated blood and deliver it to the veins.
Made up of connective tissue,
What is blood pressure?
BP is the force or pressure the blood exerts on the walls of the blood vessels in which its contained.
Where are white and red blood cells formed?
in bone marrow
