4 AA students from a North Carolina college sat at a white only lunch counter in Woolworth, Greensboro waiting to be served and refused to leave until closing time
what happens on the 2nd day and 3rd day?
2 Feb- the 4 joined by 25 other students 3rd Feb- 80 more students took turns sitting at the counters peacefully, by 4th day 300 students
Why were students doing sitins?
to try and desegregate lunch counters across Greensboro
Where did the sitins spread?
To other towns in North Carolina and finally towns across whole of South. Over 70,000 ppl participated, even spread to northern states, Ohio.

A type of protest where people refuse to leave a place until demands are considered or agreed to
What was the overall reaction to sit ins?
the participants faced abused from white segregationists .
What happened to the participants of the sitins?
Insulted, spat at, food and drinks regularly thrown on them, physically attacked. Thousands arrested.
What tactics did the arrests lead to?
‘jail not bail’ , overcrowding in jails
why did CORE and the SCLC train students?
To ensure they don’t respond with violence and ensure the media could see the aggressive harassment they faced

Sit-ins were more visible than boycotts the public and media could see AA attacked with ought retaliating attracted sympathy, Eisenhower said ‘deeply sympathetic with the efforts’ of any groups trying to get equality guaranteed by the Constitution
