The Sign Test Flashcards
What is statistical testing?
Provides a way of determining whether differences in relationships between variables are significant or occurred to chance and whether hypotheses should be accepted or rejected
What is the sign test?
A statistical test used to analyse the difference in scores between related items. Data should be nominal or better
Probability
The likelihood than certain events occur. The accepted level of probability in psychology is 0.05 / 5%
Critical value
A number the calculated value is compared to in order to determine whether it is significant or not
Sign test steps
1) Convert data to nominal data
2) Add up pluses and minuses
3) S = less frequent sign
4) Compare calculated value of S with critical value. If S < critical value, the difference is significant
