- is the hypothesis directional or non-directional
- find the sign: record each pair of data with a + or - (if the difference is positive or negative), if there’s no difference, a nil sign 0 is recorded
- calculate the value of S: add the total number of plusses and minuses and select the smaller value
- calculate the value of N: the total number of scores, minus any nil scores
- find the critical value
- determine if the results are significant or not: S must be less than or equal to the critical value
- draw a conclusion
