correlations Flashcards
what are correlational techniques?
measures the strength and direction of a relationship between two or more co-variables
positive correlation
as one variable increases the other increases
negative correlation
as one variable increases the other decreases
zero correlation
there is no relationship between co-variables
what is a correlation coefficient?
- measure the strength and nature of a relationship between co-variables
- between -1 (perfect negative correlation) and 1 (perfect positive correlation)
what graph is used?
a scattergraph shows the correlation between 2 co-variables by plotting points to represent scores
evaluate correlational techniques
+ ideal place to begin preliminary research investigations as they provide insight for future research
+ can be used when a lab experiment would be unethical as the variables aren’t manipulated, just correlated
– cannot establish a cause and effect relationship
