The Shoulder Flashcards
Describe how to find the intertubercular sulcus/bicipital groove
to the lateral side of the lesser tuberosity
Describe how to find the spine of the scapula
small triangular area medially on the scapula which increases in size as the fingers move along it
Describe how to find the long head of the biceps
can be found between the greater and lesser tuberosities where it lies in the bicipital groove
Describe how to find the acromion
expmanded lateral end of spine
either found at the medial end joining with the clavicle or the lateral end by tracing along the spine of the scapula from its most lateral point (acromial angle)
Describe how to find the coracoid process
an anterior projection below the lateral part of the clavicle
Describe how to find the inferior angle of the scapular
lowest point of the scapular which cna be gripped between thumb and finger
Describe how to find the sternoclavicular joint
medial end of the clavicle
Describe how to find the acromioclavicular articulation
line of the joint can be palpated by applying downwards pressure to the lateral end of the clavicle
Describe how to find the greater and lesser tuberosity of the humerus
- Greater
- most lateral bony point of the shoulder, found by palpating the lateral margain of the acromion and then running fingers of its edge
- Lesser
- can be felt through the deltoid, just lateral to the tip of the coracoid. can be felt to disappear on internal rotation of the shoulder
Describe how to find the suprasternal notch
inferior margain of the deep hollow at the base of the neck i.e. top of sternum
Describe how to find the clavicle
palpate laterally along the shaft
- medial 2/3 convex anteriorly
- lateral 1/3 concave
Describe how to find the infraspinatus
palpated with the subject prone on elbows and the weight shifted over shoulder being examined
shoulder is in horizontal adduction, which brings infrapinatus out for palpation
palpated the spine of the scapula laterally to the posterior acromion and drop inferiorly to locate the infra. tendon
Describe how to find the surface marking of the gleno-humeral joint
the mid point of the joint is approximately 1cm lateral to the apex of the coracoid process
a verticle line slightly concave laterally through this point gives an indication of the joint line
Describe how to find the supraspinatus tendon
palpated at the anterolateral tip of the shoulder
subject sits supine or sitting with hand tucked behind the ipsilateral hip, causing shoulder to move into internal rotation and slight extension
brings the supraspinatus tendon nearer the surface to expose it from under the acromial arch
