The Ankle and Foot Flashcards
Describe how to find the peroneal tubercule
bony point inferior and slightly anterior to the tip of the lateral malleolus of the calcaneus
Describe how to find the first metatarsal and medial cuneiform
medial cuneiform is anterior to the navicular bone.
base of the 1st metatarsal (big toe) is anterior to the medial cuneiform
Describe how to find the cuboid bone
posterior to the base of the 5th metatarsal
Describe how to find the head of the talus
below the medial malleolus, when the foot is everted
anterior to the lateral malleolus when the foot is inverted
Describe how to find the posterior tibial artery
halfway between the posterior side of the medial malleolus and medial border of the tendo calcaneus
Describe how to find the sustentaculum tali (and spring ligament)
below the talus on the medial side of the calcaneus
the ligament is from the sustententaculum tali to the navicular tuberosity
Describe how to find the dorsal pedal artery
between the first and second metatarsals
Describe how to find the surface markings of the talocrual (ankle) joint
a horizontal line drawn across the anterior surface of the ankle 2cm above the tip of the lateral malleolus. Continues down the lateral side of the med malleolus.
Describe how to find the navicular tuberosity
anterior to the medial malleolus, on the side of the navicular bone (big toe side)
Describe how to find the base of the 5th metatarsal
on the lateral side, move anteriorly from the calcaneus through a hollow
