The Senses Vocab Flashcards
Auricle
An epidermal covered cartilage structure which functions in funneling sound vibrations into the
external auditory meatus
External auditory meatus
A bony canal which carries sound waves to the tympanic membrane and has
various protective structures
Tympanic membrane
A thin membrane of epithelium which transduces air vibrations into mechanical
vibrations on the way to the inner ear.
Tympanic cavity
An air filled chamber within the ear in which the auditory ossicles are located
Auditory ossicles
?
Oval window
A structure of the inner ear which articulates with the stapes and transduces mechanical
vibrations into liquid waves as they enter the cochlea
Labyrinth
A bony or membranous chamber or maze which makes up all structures within the inner ear
Cochlea
Portion of the inner ear which houses the organs of Corti. Organ which enables us to hear.
Semicircular canals
bony labyrinth structures of the inner ear which provide us with the sense of
dynamic equilibrium
Vestibule
The area of the inner ear which houses the organs of static equilibrium
Round window
A small area of the inner ear in which waves exiting the scala tympanii of the cochelea
can be dissipated into the tympanic chamber
Organs of Corti
Microscopic hair-like sound receptors which are stimulated by various frequencies of
sound waves
Conjunctiva
A clear thin transparent membrane which lines the eyelid and the anterior surface of the eye expect the cornea
Lacrimal gland
Organ which produces a substance made of water, mucous, salts, and lysozyme
Cornea
Tough transparent covering over the anterior 1/6th of the eye which allows light to enter
Sclera
The outer covering of there posterior 5/6ths of the eye composed of fibrous connective tissue
Choroid
The black middle layer of the eye which contains blood vessles
Ciliary body
Structures of the eye which function in focusing the eye made up of the lens, ciliary muscles, and suspensory ligaments
Lens
A clear membrane like structure which is very elastic and refracts light upon the retina
Aqueous humor
A clear fluid filling the anterior cavity of the eye which nourishes the cornea and other internal parts
Vitreous humor
A clear jelly like liquid which fulls the posterior cavity of the eye
Accommodation
The ability of the ciliary muscles to change the shape of the lens, allowing clear focus at different focal lengths
Iris
A sphincter muscle which controls the amount of light that enters the eye
Optic disk
The point on the retina in which the optic nerve exits the eye and there are no photoreceptors at this point
Refraction
The bending of light rays as they pass through one medium into another
Myopia
A vision defect in which the eye is too long for correct focus
Hyperopia
A vision detect in which is too short for correct focus
Retina
The innermost layer of the posterior cavity of the eye. It is made up of millions of photoreceptors
Rods
Photoreceptors which function in black and white vision
Cones
Specialized photoreceptors which are responsible of color vision
Astigmatism
A defect in the curvature of the cornea or sometimes the lens
Presbyopia
A loss in the ability to focus on near objects due to the loss. of elasticity in the lens
