Linville’s Self complexity theory
Divides the self to different domains. Based on the idea that people have multiple distinct selves. People differ in complexity between the their selves.
Self-esteem (self-complexity theory)
Self esteem is the function and evaluation of the all self concepts. the higher the complexity between the self-concepts, the more the individual is buffered from feedback.
Social identity theory
suggests that self-esteem is a function of the positivity of our group memberships
Festinger’s Social Comparison Theory
suggests that people learn about themselves through comparisons with others . people seek similar others o validate their own perceptions, attributions and feelings.
Self-esteem (social comparison theory)
Comparing ourselves to someone better than we are will decrease our self-esteem, and can give us valuable feedback.
comparing ourselves to someone worse than us can give us a self-esteem boost, as we feel better about ourselves
Self-evaluation maintenance theory (Tesser)
What we with negative feedback depends on relative performance, psychological closeness to the person of comparison, and importance of the domain we are comparing.
