Attitudes Flashcards
Attitudes
are a stable positive or negative evaluation towards an object
What are the three components of an attitude?
- cognition - the thought component
- affect - the emotional component
- behaviour - the action component
Mere exposure effect
the more frequently you encounter something, the more positive our attitude is towards it.
What can enhance the mere exposure effect?
If the encounter is subconscious.
Instrumental conditioning
learning in which behaviours become more or less probable depending on their consequences. reinforcement vs punishment.
classical conditioning
learning through association. attitudes may develop thought association by priming a natural positive response with a conditioned stimulus.
Implicit Attitude measure
Positive and negative are big concepts in our associative networks, and so we should be able to decide rather quickly if a word is positive or negative.
Theory of reasoned action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1980)
Suggests that our attitudes are a product of our beliefs about the outcome of that behaviour, which is wighted by our evaluations about the outcome of that behaviour. this is complied together with social norms, as we are unlikely to act in a way that defies the norms around us.
Specific attitude that has normative support predict an intent to act, which predicts actual behaviour.
Which attitudes are most useful for predictions (according to Fazio)?
Accessible attitudes and and attitudes that are in association in memory .
MODE model
Motivation and Opportunity as Determinants of the attitude behaviour relationship.
