Holds to the idea that what you perceive is different to what is really occurring

Are a cognitive structure which represents knowledge about a concept or a stimulus, including its attributes and the relations among these attributes.
How do we interpret the world?

Proposes that when forming first impressions, people take more notice of central traits than peripheral traits
Central traits
Have disproportioned influenced on impressions of others
What is using a schema based on?
- salience - a property of the target that attracts attention, what we focus on
- priming - when exposure to a stimulus makes a subsequent mental process more likely or efficient
- accessibility - the ease with which the schema comes to mind
Hostile media phenomenon
we interpret a certain situation based on our pre-existing ideas
Confirmation bias or the ‘Self-fulfilling prophecy’
existing schemas guiding what information we search for
