The Scientific Revolution Flashcards
Galileo Galilei
First real modern scientist - He had a hypothesis, tested his conclusions, generalized them, and then published the for other people to discover and test as well!
He took Descartes discourse on method to proving that the method work:
- why did the heavens move?
- invented a telescope.
- -> people thought his telescope was a toy, but Galileo knew it wasn’t because of what he could see and he published a book on this:
He proved that Jupiter had moons, things in the universe that we have not seen - What else is out there and how come we didn’t know about this!?
- It was a revolutionary because people thought it was perfect and round and it disproved the belief of Theology of a perfect universe began to fall apart
- In 1597, Galileo believed that it had to be true that the Earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around
- Belief in heliocentric universe - defied teachings of the bible, society, etc.
- Wrote Magnum Opus in 1623 and printed it in 1632
- He was a scientist and did not give a SHIT about religion or politics
- He didn’t care about the church or the state, only cared for his own findings and evidence he proved!
Isaac Newton
- He contributed greatly to mathematics, optics, physics, etc.
- Combined physics and astronomy to discover motion (of something?)
- Book of importance (that made him a superstar) = Mathematical Principles
“If God exists at all, he is the first cause (the mechanic that builds the Universe, puts it in swing, etc.) … After the universe is created, is he really needed?
If he’s not necessary – maybe he leaves us alone as well?
We are now in charge of our environment*
John Locke
- think of Psych!!!
- Interested in the acquisition of knowledge, education, and the belief that just by being human, we all have certain rights that no one can take away from us
When we are born, we are born with our minds as a blank slate, and as we grow this slate is filled with our sense experience
We are the product of our experience and knowledge!
