When was the referendum and what was it?
It was in 1935 and was a vote held in the Saar to see if they wanted to rejoin Germany or not. The results showed that around 90% of the population wanted to return to Germany.
What was the Saar?
An important coal mining area that belonged to Germany before the Treaty of Versailles. It had been given to Belgium for 15 years.
What was Anschluss?
The joining of Germany and Austria.
When was Anschluss?
1938
What initially stopped Hitler from invading Austria?
Mussolini would not allow him to. He put 100,000 troops at the border to stop Hitler.
What was the Rome-Berlin Axis?
An agreement between Hitler and Mussolini that allowed Hitler to invade Austria.
What were the results of the plebiscite in Austria?
99.75% of Austrians wanted to join Germany.
