Manchuria Flashcards

They couldn’t impose economic sanctions because these would be ineffective (Japan’s main trading partner was USA who weren’t in the League)
The League had no army so couldn’t use military force.
Most countries in League didn’t want to spend money.
They sent out the Lytton Commission to investigate but it was too slow.
What were the main causes/reason of the Manchurian Crisis?
Manchuria was rich in coal, iron and oil.
Japan had a railway in Manchuria.
Japan had trouble exporting their only raw material, silk.
When was the Japanese invasion of Manchuria?
1932
What did Japan do once they had invaded Manchuria?
Renamed it ‘Manchukuo’ and put Chinese emperor in control.
What was the single event that Japan used as an excuse to invade Manchuria?
A part of their railway in Manchuria was blown up.
They claimed this was done by Chinese soldiers and had been ‘forced’ to invade to ‘protect’ Japanese interests.

There was little evidence to suggest that Japan had acted in self defence.
What was the main effect of the Manchurian Crisis?
