The Role Of Play Flashcards
What is play?
Self-directed, purposeless and internally motivated. There are no rules and it is done because it is fun.
Different forms of play
- active play involves a practice of skills in a free and fluid way
- outdoor play involves any type of activity in an outdoor setting and engaging with the environment
- Exploratory play is allowing kids to wander with minimal to no adult supervision
- creative play is where children make sense of social environments, and rules
The four developments of playful learning
- Internalized and engaged, physical activity.
- Develop physical competence (developing FMS and ABC’s)
- Development of social behaviours and connections
- Improvement in critical thinking and problem-solving
Barriers to play
Over scheduling and burn out due to time management
Why don’t adults play?
Avoiding feelings of embarrassment and feeling like they must be serious because they are positions of leadership and power. Social norms and rules block us from doing this.
Risky play
Situation where a child can recognize and evaluate a challenge and decide on a course of action
Self regulation, monitoring, and supervision
Supervision can impact a child’s engagement in activities, monitoring is moving away from supervision and attempt to give the child more freedom
