a decicion made by the court that punishment for a crime should involve time being in custody

what is deterrence?
unpleasant prison experience puts off individual and society
-general and individual deterrence
-behaviourist idea
what is incapaciatation?
The offender is taken out of society to prevent them reoffending
-depends of severity of offense
what is retribution?
society is enacting revenge for the offense by making the offender suffer a level that is proportionate to the seriousness of the offense
what is rehabilitation?
purpose is too reform- offenders should leave prison better adjusted and ready to take their place back in society- offenders should have opportunities for skills and treatment.

What is institutionalisation?
when innmates adapt to the norms and values of prison life and become so accustomed that they are no longer able to function on the outside
what is prisonation?
prisonation refers to the way prisoners are socialised into adopting the ‘inmate code’- behaviour that is unacceptable in the outside world is encouraged and rewarded in prison
what is the effect of stress and depression?
suicide rates are higher in prison than in the general population with an increaded risk of developing psychological disorders following release
