differatial assosiation theory Flashcards
who proposed differential association theory?
edwin sutherland
what is the basic of differential association theory?
the theory focuses on the role and learning and socialisation in terms of associations has an influence on acquired behaviours. individual learns the values, attitudes, techniques and motives for offending behaviour through association with intimate personal groups
what is the scientific basis of this theory?
sutherland developed scientific principles that could explain offending. The conditions that are said to cause crime are present when crime is present.
explain offending as a learned behaviour (attitudes and techniques)
offending is aquired through the process of learning that occours through interactions with others. DAT proposed it should be mathmatically possible to commit how likley someone is to commit an offense (frequency, intensity, duration)
learned attitudes (pro crime or anti crime)
learned techniques-
How can DAT explain reoffending?
in prison criminals exposed to pro-crime attitudes and learning specific criminal techniques
