the offender is required to reflect on past experiences and their typical pattern of anger and the triggers. the therapist should make it clear if their interpretations are irrational
what is skills acquisition?
offenders are introduced to a range of techniques and skills to help them deal with anger provoking situations more rationally and effectively
what are the 3 types of techniques for skills acquisition?
cognitive
behavioural
physiological
what are cognitive techniques?
positive self talk to encourage calmness- e.g. counting to 10
what are behavioural techniques?
assertiveness training in how to communicate more effectively
what are physiological techniques?
to deal with the physical reaction of anger with relaxation training or meditation in order to try and control emotions
what is application practice?
offenders are given the opportunity to practice their skills in a carefully controlled environment. the thearapist and offender may role play anger provoking situations from their past

studied the progress of young offenders in an anger management programme with 8 two hour sessions. there were initial issues with offenders not taking the course seriously however the final outcomes were generally positive- increased capacity to exercise self control
