Redistricting
- the redrawing of legislative districts to reflect changes in population & seat allotments to states
- also known as reapportionment
Gerrymandering
- the process of redistricting that favors one political party
- for the vast majority of states, state legislatures decide redistricting
Baker v. Carr (1921)
Supreme Court ruling which the state of Tennessee was forced to adhere to the one-man one-vote principle. State legislatures must be proportionally represented
Voter turnout
-the # of people who vote during on election
Elections
- Presidential election 50% of people who could vote actually vote
- mid-term/off-year election
Australian Ballot
-a secret ballot in order to discourage voter intimidation or bribery
Safe seat
A legislative district drawn in such a manner that it effectively ensures the dominance of one political party. Safe seats are the products of gerrymandering 15% of the population will write a letter or make a phone call to one’s representatives
