Metonymy
When the name of a place or city is used to denote an industry or gov’t establishment
Ex: Washington, Hollywood, or Wall Street
Interest group
any organizations that has a hierarchy structure, whose members share a common interest, & attempts to influence public. Alternatively known as pressure groups & special interests
Types of interest groups
- public: green peace, Sierra club, ACLU
- private: NRA, NOW, NAACP
-Economic: unions/industries teamsters

the activities of interest groups that seek to influence public policy
Hard money
Legal limits on money given directly for a candidate for an election by an individual, the federal hard money limit for the 2016 election is $2700 per candidate per election

- Any money that circumvents legal restriction on campaign donations
- Funds that are funneled through political parties
Advocacy Ads
Ads not paid by the candidate nor political party
Political action committees (PACs)
A federally registered committees that represents an interest group in the political process through campaign donations
Super pact
A PAC that does not have any contribution or expenditure limits but cannot coordinate political process through campaign donations

Term used to describe the informal and temporary set of relationships that exists among interest groups that have a common goal
Grassroots lobbying
A firm of pressure group activity to involve those people at the bottom level of political system

An attempt by interest groups to influence public policy in the guise of a grassroots movement
Revolving door
Term used to describe when a former governmental official leaves his job & becomes a lobbyist
