Initiate and make laws
In accordance with its authority under the Constitution – S51 outlines the areas of laws the Federal Government and the “House” can enact.
Determine the government
After an election the elected members have to form groups (parties) until they have a majority. The groups with the most members are appointed by the Governor General to be the government.
Provide responsible government by representing the people
It is forum for representatives from all parts of Australia to put the views of the people about the laws being enacted and the actions of the government.
Publicize and scrutinize government administration and the public service
Departments: By debating the proposed laws in the “House” the Australian people (via the media) become aware of the decisions being made that will affect them.
Control government expenditure:
The “House” members must approve the budget each year which authorizes how much the government can spend of the taxpayer’s money.
