Pharynx

A
  • Made of nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
  • Tonsils protect against inhaled germs
  • Normally larynx is open and esophagus is closed unless someone swallows
  • If food/liquid enters the larynx, it causes coughing/choking
  • “Heimlich maneuver” can be used to dislodge food blocking the airway
  • AKA – throat

Larynx

A
  • Passageway for air between pharynx and trachea
  • AKA the voice box
  • Tip of the larynx (laryngeal prominence) is also called the Adam’s apple
  • Vocal cords are mucosal folds supported by elastic ligaments
  • The space between the vocal cords is the glottis
  • Air being expelled through the glottis makes the vocal cords vibrate
