The Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
Upper Respiratory Tract
A
- Nose
- Pharynx
- Larynx
2
Q
Pharynx
A
- Made of nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
- Tonsils protect against inhaled germs
- Normally larynx is open and esophagus is closed unless someone swallows
- If food/liquid enters the larynx, it causes coughing/choking
- “Heimlich maneuver” can be used to dislodge food blocking the airway
- AKA – throat
3
Q
Larynx
A
- Passageway for air between pharynx and trachea
- AKA the voice box
- Tip of the larynx (laryngeal prominence) is also called the Adam’s apple
- Vocal cords are mucosal folds supported by elastic ligaments
- The space between the vocal cords is the glottis
- Air being expelled through the glottis makes the vocal cords vibrate
4
Q
Lower Respiratory Tract
A
- Trachea
- Bronchial Tree
- Lungs
5
Q
Plasma
A
- Liquid medium for carrying various substances in the blood
- 91% water
- 9% various salts and organic molecules
- Plasma proteins
