What’s the pharynx ?

A

It’s at the back of the throat. Important for vocalisation. Both air and food passes through.

What’s the larynx ?

A

It’s the voice box. Helps protect the trachea.

What’s the epiglottis ?

A

Covers the top of trachea. A flap of cartilage. Shuts when we swallow food to stop food going down the windpipe and prevents us choking.

What’s the trachea ?

A

A tubular passage. Rings of cartilage gives the trachea stability. Delivers air to the lungs.

What’s the bronchi ?

A

Are larger tubes which enter into the lungs. Contain cartilage rings. Contain mucus which helps trap and microbes.

What are the bronchioles ?

A

Don’t contain cartilage. They divide 23 times and end in 8 million terminal bronchioles in each lung.

What’s the alveoli ?

A

Groups of air sacs. The location of gas exchange.

What is the order of the flow of air through a system ?

A

Atmosphere -> nose and mouth/nasal cavity -> pharynx -> larynx -> trachea -> bronchi -> bronchioles -> terminal bronchioles -> alveoli -> blood
