The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is pulmonary ventilation ?
Is a term used to describe the process of being in air in and out of the body.
What’s the respiratory systems functions ?
Transport oxygen into the body
Transport carbon dioxide out of the body
What’s the pharynx ?
It’s at the back of the throat. Important for vocalisation. Both air and food passes through.
What’s the larynx ?
It’s the voice box. Helps protect the trachea.
What’s the epiglottis ?
Covers the top of trachea. A flap of cartilage. Shuts when we swallow food to stop food going down the windpipe and prevents us choking.
What’s the trachea ?
A tubular passage. Rings of cartilage gives the trachea stability. Delivers air to the lungs.
What’s the bronchi ?
Are larger tubes which enter into the lungs. Contain cartilage rings. Contain mucus which helps trap and microbes.
What are the bronchioles ?
Don’t contain cartilage. They divide 23 times and end in 8 million terminal bronchioles in each lung.
What’s the alveoli ?
Groups of air sacs. The location of gas exchange.
What is the order of the flow of air through a system ?
Atmosphere -> nose and mouth/nasal cavity -> pharynx -> larynx -> trachea -> bronchi -> bronchioles -> terminal bronchioles -> alveoli -> blood
