What does anterior mean ?
In front of the body.
What does posterior mean ?
The back of the body.
What does superior mean ?
Above or toward the head.
What does inferior mean ?
Below or away from the head.
What does medial mean ?
Towards the midline of the body.
What does lateral mean ?
Away from the midline of the body.
What does proximal mean ?
Closer to the point of reference.
What does distal mean ?
Further from point of reference.
What does superficial mean ?
Closer or on body surface.
What does deep mean ?
Beneath the skin.
What does flexion mean ?
Angle of a joint decreases.
What does extension mean ?
Angle of a joint increases or return from flexion.
What does hyperextension mean ?
Extension beyond normal anatomical position.
What does abduction mean ?
Moving a body part away from midline of the body.
What does Adduction mean ?
Moving a body part towards the midline of the body.
What does supination mean ?
Turning or rotating the body part upwards and outwards.
What does pronation mean ?
Turning the body part downwards and upwards.
What does rotation mean ?
Pivoting the body part inwards or outwards along an axis.
What does circumduction mean ?
A complete circular motion of a body part.
What does eversion mean ?
Turning outwards.
What does inversion mean ?
Turning inwards.
What does dorsi flexion mean ?
Lifting.
What does plantar flexion mean ?
Pointing.
What are the three planes of motion and how they separate the body ?
Sagittal - Left and Right of body
Frontal - Front and back of body
Transverse - Top and bottom of body
