Muscular System Flashcards
What are the three muscle types ?
Smooth
Cardiac
Skeletal
What are the muscle labels ?
1.
Trapezius
Gastrocnemius
Tibialis Anterior
Bicep Femoris
Pectorals
Rectus Abdominis
Gluteus Maximus
Biceps
2.
Obliques
Triceps
Adductors
Soleus
Rectus Femoris
Deltoids
Latissimus Dorsi
Erector Spinae
What three things does muscle activation need ?
Energy in the form of ATP
Calcium (the on/off switch)
Stimulus (nerve message)
What are the three functions of a muscle ?
Movement
Posture
Heat Production (catabolism)
What does origin mean ?
Origin is the point of attachment closest to the midline of the body. It remains relatively fixed when the muscle contracts.
What does insertion mean ?
Insertion is the point of attachment furthest away from the midline of body. When the muscle contracts it moves more than the point of origin.
What are the three muscle fibre types ?
Type 1 (slow)
Type IIa (fast)
Type IIb (fast)
What is type 1 muscle fibre ?
Slow twitch or slow oxidative. Good blood supply. Slow contraction speed. Very resistant to fatigue. Hugh numbers of mitochondria. Endurance activities.
What is type II muscle fibre ?
Fast twitch. Poor blood supply, IIa - lower than maximal capacity, IIb - at near maximal capacity. Fast contraction speed. Fatigues easily. High intensity activities.
