The respiratory system Flashcards
What is the most important function of the respiratory system?
Respiration.
Describe the components of the upper respiratory tract
All structures outside the lungs. These are the nostrils, the nasal passages, the pharynx, the larynx and the trachea.
Describe the components of the lower respiratory tract
All structures within the lungs. These are bronchi, bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli.
What do the nasal passages do?
Warms, moistens and cleans air that is breathed in.
What does the larynx do?
It deliver air to the trachea while preventing food from entering the trachea
Where is the trachea located and what are its functions?
It is located between the larynx and the bronchi. It delivers air to the bronchi and helps to clean it before it enters the lungs.
What do alveoli do?
They are the site of the exchange of Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide between blood and air.
Describe the location of the mediastinum
In the thoracic cavity between the lungs.
List the normal ranges for the breathing rates of cats and dogs
Cats - 20-40 breaths per minute (bpm)
Dogs - 12-40 bpm
