Reformation
split of Christianity and the emergence of Protestant branches (Lutherans, Calvinism, Anglicans); want to translate the bible for all to read; key focus on the bible as the source of truth; concept of correct belief
Calvinists
influence the Netherlands, Scotland, and Northern Britain
Anglicans
combination of Lutheran and Calvinist; bears a resemblance to the Catholic Church
Correct Belief
having the correct understanding of religion is of extreme importance
Catholic Counter-Reformation
Catholics’ response to the Protestants to strengthen the Catholic Church; clarify itself and establish higher standards; Council of Trent was formed
Council of Trent
- religious council where people of the Catholic Church come together to hammer out the Protestant religion
- believed that the truth was found in more than the bible: traditions, church councils, and saints are sources too
Protestant beliefs
- the bible holds the entire truth
- saints, pilgrimages, purgatory, clerical celibacy, monks, and nuns are unnecessary
- being part of a clergy does not make you a better person
To be a part of the church…
go to seminary, be an adult, have no wives, preach regularly, take confession regularly
New Orders
organization that are joined to the Church and try to carry out the works of the Catholic Church (Ursulines and Jesuits)
Ursulines
- located in Canada
- female order (school in Europe for girls)
- often cloister
- founded by Angela
- education and missionary work
Jesuits
- located in Canada, India, and Japan
- not a standard monk
- international: head of the Jesuits is ruler and above him is the pope
- sometimes accused of being spies
- can travel freely, dress how they please, no strict schedule
- education and missionary work
- effective in spreading the Catholic faith
