The Rate Of Photosynthesis Flashcards
Why is water considered to be a minor limiting factor for the rate of photosynthesis?
Because if then plant is at a stage where there is so little water that it has become a limiting factor then the plant is already dying
What is a limiting factor?
A factor which caps the rate at which a reaction can occur
Which factor limits the rate of photosynthesis at night?
Light
Which factor limits the rate of photosynthesis during the winter?
Temperature
How do you measure the rate of photosynthesis?
You measure the amount of oxygen produced over a period of time as oxygen is produced during photosynthesis
What affect does not enough light have on the rate of photosynthesis?
It slows it down
Why is light necessary during photosynthesis?
It provides the energy needed for the reaction to take place
What affect does the level of light have on the rate of photosynthesis?
It increases steadily up to a certain point (due to a limiting factor of carbon dioxide or temperature)
What effect does too little carbon dioxide have on the rate of photosynthesis?
It slows down the rate
What affect does the volume of carbon dioxide have on the rate of photosynthesis?
It steadily increases up to the point where the volume of carbon dioxide is no longer the limiting factor
Why does the rate of photosynthesis drop drastically if the temperature is too high?
Because the enzymes are destroyed
Why is the temperature being too low a limiting factor for the rate of photosynthesis?
Because if the temperature is too low then the enzymes required work slowly
At what temperature do the enzymes stop working?
45 degrees
What is the most common way to artificially create the ideal environment for photosynthesis?
A greenhouse
How does a greenhouse help to create the ideal temperature for photosynthesis?
- traps heat from sunlight
- artificial heaters during the winter
- shades/ventilation during the summer
