How Plants Use Glucose Flashcards
Why is glucose needed for respiration?
It allows the plant to release energy which allows them to convert the remaining glucose into other useful substances which allow them to grow and survive
Why is glucose needed when making a cell wall?
Glucose can be converted into cellulose which is needed to make a strong cell wall (especially important in rapidly growing plants)
Why is glucose needed to make proteins?
Glucose is combined with nitrate ions in order to create amino acids which are the building blocks of proteins
How is glucose stored in seeds?
Glucose is turned into lipids (fats and oils)
Why is glucose turned into starch?
- stored in roots, stem and leaves
- insoluble meaning that it can be stored in a cell without the cell swelling with water
What five uses does glucose have within plants?
- respiration
- making cell walls
- making proteins
- stored in seeds
- stored as starch
