The rate and extent of chemical change Flashcards
What factors affect the rate of reaction?
1) Temperature
2) Concentration/pressure
3) Surface Area
4) Catalysts
What is the equation for measuring the rate of reaction?
Time
What is equllibrium?
When the forward reaction is working at the same rate as the backward reaction.
When can equillibrium only take place?
In a closed system
What does it mean when equillibrium is greater to the right?
The concentration is greater on the products than the reactants
What is the endo/exo rule for reversible reactions?
If the forward reaction is exothermic, the backward reaction is endothermic and vise versa…
Le Chatalliers principle
If you change the conditions of a reversible reaction, at equillibrium, the system will try to counter act that change
What happens if you change the temperature of a reversible reaction?
Decrease the temperature, equillibrium will move to the exothermic side to produce more heat
What happens if you change the pressure of a reversible reaction?
Increase the pressure, and the equilibrium will move to the side with fewer particles of gas
What happens if you change the concentration in a reversible reaction?
Increase the reactants, and the equilibrium will move towards the products
