What is the psychodynamic approach?
Describes different forces which are unconscious. They operate on the mind and direct human behaviour and experience
What the unconscious?
Part of the mind we are unaware of but directs most of our behaviour.
What is the ID?
Unconscious, Made up of selfish aggressive instincts that demand gratification
What is the Ego?
Reality check that balances demands of the ID and superego
What is the superego?
The ideal self we ought to be
What is a defence mechanism?
Unconscious strategies Ego uses to manage conflict between ID and superego
What is the psychosexual stages?
5 development stages that all children go through. Which determines outcome
Explain the role of the unconscious mind?
- The part of the mind we know is called the conscious mind. It is the tip of the iceberg.
- Most of our mind is made up of the unconscious mind. This has a significant influence on personality and behaviour.
- Can also contain threatening memories
- like calling teacher’s mum
- under conscious it is the preconscious which are thoughts and memories not conscious.
Explain the structure of personality?
- ID operates on the pleasure principle. It gets what it wants. Only the ID is present at birth. It is selfish and demands instant gratification of its needs
- Ego works on the reality principle . Develops around age 2 and reduces conflict between demands of ID and superego. Employs defence mechanisms.
- Superego is developed end of phallic stage around the age of 5. Its the sense of right and wrong. Punishes Ego
Explain psychosexual stages?
There are 5 stages and if conflict is unresolved you will be stuck in that stage and carry on to adult life
what is the oral stage?
Focuses on pleasure in the mouth and can lead to smoking and nail biting
What is the anal stage?
1-3 ages and focuses on pleasure in the anus consequences are thoughtless and messy
What is the phallic stage?
Pleasure in the genital area and leads to narcissistic and reckless
What is latency?
Earlier conflicts are repressed
What is genital stage?
Sexual desires become conscious and cause are difficulty of forming hetrosexual relationships.
