Explain the role of the unconscious mind?

A
  • The part of the mind we know is called the conscious mind. It is the tip of the iceberg.
  • Most of our mind is made up of the unconscious mind. This has a significant influence on personality and behaviour.
  • Can also contain threatening memories
  • like calling teacher’s mum
  • under conscious it is the preconscious which are thoughts and memories not conscious.

Explain the structure of personality?

A
  • ID operates on the pleasure principle. It gets what it wants. Only the ID is present at birth. It is selfish and demands instant gratification of its needs
  • Ego works on the reality principle . Develops around age 2 and reduces conflict between demands of ID and superego. Employs defence mechanisms.
  • Superego is developed end of phallic stage around the age of 5. Its the sense of right and wrong. Punishes Ego

A
  • Boys had big feelings towards their mums and wanted to get rid of their father. Girls wanted to do same thing and get rid of mother. Hans was 5 years and developed phobia for horses. Freud said he put his anger on the horse and showed an unconscious fear.
