Q

What is the internal mental process?

A

Private operations of the mind.
- Such as perception and attention that change between stimulus and response.

Q

Explain assumptions about Cognitive Approach?

A
  • They say internal mental processes can be studied scientifically.
  • They investigate memory ,perception and thinking
  • They’re private and cannot be observed therefore they have to make inferences.

Q

Explain the role of Schema?

A
  • Cognitive processing can be affected by a persons belief or expectations. Which is called a Schema
  • Schemas are packages of ideas and information developed through experience.
  • For example the schema for a chair is that it has legs to sit on.
  • Thats package of information which help you respond to object appropriately.
  • As we get older the schemas get more advanced ands detailed. For example what a restaurant looks like or zombies.
  • It helps us process information quickly and is a mental shortcut
  • Can also make us errors

Q

Explain theoretical and computer models?

A
  • Cognitive psychologists use both theoretical and cognitive models to help them understand internal processes.
  • Theoretical models are abstract whereas computers are concrete.
  • Important is information processing approach which suggests information flows through cognitive system.
  • Include input ,storage and retrieval

Q

Explain cognitive approach problem solving?

A

A cognitive scientist carried out a research. One group of 15 children where they can talk to each other and another group of 25 where they couldn’t talk to each other. More problems were solved when they couldn’t talk to each other.

Q

Evaluate a strength of cognitive science?

A
  • Uses objective scientific methods
  • highly controlled rigorous activities
  • Uses lab studies for objective data
  • Credible scientific basis as biology and cognitive have come together

Q

One limitation of Cognitive Approach?

A
  • Bases on machine reductionism
  • Computer analogy has been criticised and ignores human emotion and motivation.
  • Affects how we process information
