The Psychodynamic Approach Flashcards
What did freud believe in?
Psychic determinism. All our behaviour is determined by unconscious conflicts we cannot control
What are the three parts Freud said personality had?
ID,Ego and Superego
What is ID?
the innate part of personality
Operates on the pleasure principle demanding instant gratification. Often in conflict with superego
What is EGO?
develops by age 3. operates on reality principle, balancing IDs models and superegos morals. Uses defence mechanisms to resolve conflicts
What is the Superego?
Develops during the phallic stage (around 5). Constantly clashes with id. Represents a Childs sense of right and wrong
What did Freud suggest?
Children pass through 5 stages. Oral,Anal,Phallic,Latency and Genital.
Whats the oral stage?
0-1 Year Focuses on the mouth(sucking)
Whats the anal stage?
1-3 years Focus on controlling bowel movements
Whats the Phallic stage?
3-6 Years Focuses on genitals leading to boys or girls.
whats Latency stage?
6-12 years Focuses on social and intellectual development
whats the genital stage?
12+ focuses on sexual relationships and maturity
Whats fixation?
If conflicts arent resolved ,behaviours from that stage carry on into adulthood
What was little hans?
Freud explained Hans fear of horses because of Oedipus complex. Hans feared his father and transferred this fear into horses
What are some unconscious conflicts?
- Cannot be objectively measured
- Karl Popper criticised Freuds theories as unfalsifiable and called psychodynamic approach a pseudoscience.
- The harms psychology credibility
Whats a case study in this topic?
Freuds theories rely on case studies (e.g little Hans). Case studies are not valid as they rely on small general samples. also researcher bias
