Social Learning Theory Flashcards
What is Social learning theory?
Explains how people learn in two ways. Directly: Through rewards and punishments
Indirectly: By watching others be rewarded or punished
How does learning happen?
- A person chooses a role model
- The role model shows a behaviour
- The observer copies the behaviour
- Consequences are more important the behaviour
What is a role model?
Someone the observer identifies with, similar age, gender or high status
What is Identification?
When a person relates to a role model and wants to be like them
What is Vicarious reinforcement?
learning by seeing someone else get rewarded for their behaviour
What is meditational processes?
Mental steps between seeing a behaviour than copying it
How is SLT Used
What is Bandura Bobo doll study?
- Children aged 3-6 split in groups
- On saw adults acting aggressive in real life
- Another saw it on video
- A third saw it as cartoon characters
Result: Children who saw aggressive role models acted aggressively towards doll
Why does Doll study matter?
It shows people watch their role models
Weakness of SLT?
Focuses on learning from experience but ignores factors like hormones
- Boys were more aggressive than woman due to high testosterone levels
2nd weakness of SLT?
Bobo doll meant to be hit so children thought aggression was expected. Study also doesn’t reflect real life situations
Strength of SLT?
Humans think about actions before copying them and this makes SLT more realistic which only focuses on automatic response.
