Approaches Flashcards
what is science?
Discovering the physical and natural world systematically and objectively using observation and experimentation.
What is systematic?
Using a controlled or fixed method. They follow a standardised plan and it gives researchers confidence that they measure what they plan to measure. Other scientists can replicate
what does objectively mean?
In a non biased way
what is Empiricism?
Must test their idea and base conclusion collected from the world.
Who was the father of psychology?
Wundt and studied the mind and the brain but was limited to philosophy and medicine. He wanted to use scientific methods to study the brain
Facts about Wundt?
First set lab up in 1870 in Leipzig. First person to call himself a psychologist and produced first psychological journal
What did Wundt call his research and what was it?
Structuralism. Uncover the mind by describing its terms in simple components. Introspection was the experiment technique
what is the process of introspection?
1) Participants trained to report conscious experiences objectively as possible
2) Focus of sensory object
3)Systematically report their experiences by breaking their thoughts
what is introspection?
Making inferences which means making guesses or assumptions
Whats a positive evaluation of Wundt?
- Highly Scientific because of the controlled experiments. Systematic approaches allowed to develop theories and replicate findings
Neg and Pos of Wundt?
His introspective techniques are considered subjective because participants cannot be relied on giving accurate mental states
Wundt neg?
Uses inferences to identify mental states has been criticised as theyre not accurate and only inferences. Behavioural psychologists rejected the study of mental states as the mind is a black box.
2) Wundt pos?
Wundt argued that behaviours are determined so they have a cause and can be studied objectively
