The pituitary and thyroid glands Flashcards
Describe the structure of the sphenoid bone

What is the pituitary fossa?
This is the pituitary fossa – this is where the pituitary gland sits
Where is the optic canal found on the sphenoid bone?
What passes through it?
The optic nerve passes through this going from the brain to the orbit.
Locate the clinoid processes and wings of the sphenoid bone

Locate the superior orbital fissure

other nerves pass through this from the brain to the eye.
Describe the inside of the skull when the sphenoid be is taken out
Here we have the greater and lesser wing.
We also have the clinoid processes
Where the pituitary sits is known as sella turica (saddle) because it looks like a sadle
Locate the infundibulum, hypothalamus and pituitary gland on the sagittal plane
Locate the pituitary stalk
Locate the sells turcica (sphenoid bone)

What is the white structure the the PG?
This white structure is the part of the optic nerve. Its is called the optic chiasma. This is where the left and right optic nerves cross over on the way back to the brain.
locate the optic chiasma between the pituitary stalk or infundibulum
Locate the carotid arteries
What completes the circle of Willis in the brain
Here is the optic chiasma. In betweeen the is the pituitary stalk or the infundinulem.
We can also see the cut end of the internal carotid artery
We also have the basalla artery and the carotid arteries forming the circle of willis
Label the X-ray of the skull
