Ovaries and Testes Flashcards
Where do the ovaries lie?
The ovaries lie in the superior part of the pelvic cavity, on each side of the uterus. They are small flattened structures with a lobulated surface.
Remind yourself of the venous drainage of the ovaries
The right ovarian vein drains into the inferior vena cava and the left ovarian vein drains into the left renal vein. They run through the suspensory ligament, from the lateral wall of the pelvis towards the ovary.
What does the uterus lie on top off?
The uterus lies on top of the superior surface of the bladder.
What does anti-flexed mean?
The uterus is anti-flexed (bent), so the fundus region lies on the superior surface of the bladder
What does anteverted mean?
Anteverted means the access of the cervix is angled with respect to the access of the vagina.
Are the pelvic organs covered in the peritoneum and what does it form?
The pelvic organs are covered by peritoneum which forms the broad ligament of the of the uterus.
Identify the uterus, uterine tubes and the fimbriae

What do the testes descend through?
The testes develop inside the abdomen, then descend through the inguinal canal to reach the scrotum.
During there decent the testes become covered by the three layers of the anterolateral abdominal wall.
What are these layers?
These layers from three layers of the spermatic fascia: external, internal and cremasteric (middle). These are sheets of CT that surround the testes.
Locate the pampiniform plexus
What is this?
This plexus forms the testicular vein as it passes through the deep inguinal ring.
Describe what the epididymis passes through
The epididymis is continuous with the ductus deferens. It terminates in the posterior bladder. It passes through the superficial ring, traverses the inguinal canal, then the body enters the cavity via the deep inguinal ring. Because it is a site of potential weakness in the abdominal wall, the inguinal canal is a common site of a potential weakens in the abdominal wall, the inguinal canal is a common site for hernias to develop
Locate the cremaster muscle, what do these surround?
The cremaster muscles forms the middle of the three layers of the spermatic cord.
What is the skin of the scrotum lined by?
The skin of the scrotum is lined by the dartos muscle, a layer of smooth muscle that contract and relaxes depending on the external temperature, the dartos is responsible for the wrinkled appearance of the scrotum
