Q

Describe the blood and arterial supply of the thyroid gland

A
  • Blood supply is delivered by the superior thyroid artery – the first branch of the external carotid
  • The inferior thyroid artery comes from the subclavian artery and ascends in the root of the neck.
  • The recurrent laryngeal nerve runes superiorly in the groove between the trachea and oesophagus. Passes under the arch of aorta.
  • Venous drainage of the thyroid is via the superior, middle and inferior thyroid veins
