The pH Scale Flashcards
What is the pH scale?
The pH scale is a numerial system that determines if an aqueous solution is acidic or basic. pH can be referred to as ‘the power of Hydrogen’ (concentration of H+ ions in solution).
What does it mean if something has a pH of 7?
pH of 7 means it is basic.
What does it mean when the pH is 0-6?
pH 0-6 is acidic.
What does it mean when the pH is 8-14?
pH of 8-14 is basic.
As the pH increases, what happens to the H+ and OH- ions?
As the pH increases, the H+ ions decrease (inverse) and the OH- (proportional) increase.
As the pH decrease, what happens to the OH- ions?
The OH- ions decrease as well.
How do you calculate pH for a solution?l
pH = -log[H+]
What are indicators?
Indicators are dyes that show different colours when protonated and unprotonated.
What does protonated mean?
To protonate is to add a proton.
What does unprotonated mean?
To unprotonate is to take away a proton
