Further Acid Reactions Flashcards
What are the possible acid reactions?
An acid and base, acid and metal
What two products are there when acid and metal react?
Metal salt (MgCl2) and hydrogen (H2)
How do we know that hydrogen gas has been produced?
A pop test is used to determine if hydrogen gas has been produced. When reacting an acid and metal, hydrogen gas is produced. When a lit match comes close, the collision of the hydrogen and oxygen combine to make water. Makes a POP! sound.
Do all metals react with acid?
Most do but not all. The reactivity of metals is in the formula sheet.
What 3 products do acids and carbonates create?
Water (H2O), Metal Salt (NaCl) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
How do we know that CO2 was produced?
We know that CO2 was produced through the lit splint test. An acid and a carbonate are mixed and the gas produced is collected by a test tube placed on top.
A flame needs oxygen to burn but the oxygen is bonded to the carbon. This will force the flame to go out.
