The Peripheral Nervous system Flashcards
What does PNS stand for?
Peripheral Nervous System
What makes up the PNS?
All nerves OUTSIDE the nervous system
What is the function of this part of the nervous system?
To relay nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body back to the CNS
What are the two main divisons of the PNS>
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
What is the somatic nervous system made up of?
12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves
What are cranial nerves?
Nerves that emerge directly from the underside of the brain
What are spinal nerves?
Nerves that emerge from the spinal cord
What is the somatic nervou system involved with?
Reflex actions without the involvement of the CNS making the movements even faster
What does the autonomic nervous system regulate?
Involuntary actions such as heart beats, digesting foods
What does the ANS stand for?
Autonomic nervous system
What are the names of the two parts the ANS is split into?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
What does the SNS stand for?
Sympathetic nervous system
What is the SNS primarily involved with?
Examples?
Responses that help us deal with emergencies ( fight or flight)
Increasing heart rate, increasing blood pressure
Where do neurons from the SNS travel to?
virtually every organ and gland within the body, preparing the body for the rapid action necessary when the individual is under threat
Some examples of what the SNS cause the body to do?
Causes the body to release stored energy
- Pupil dilate
- hair stands on end
- Slows down digestion
