The Periodic Table Flashcards
What are Groups in a periodic Table
These show the number of electrons present in the outermost shell
What are periods in a periodic Table
These represent the number of shells that are in an atom of an element in the periodic table.
How are elements arranged in the Periodic Table
In the order of increasing Atomic Number.
How to denote the position of an Element in the Periodic Table using the Electronic Configuration
The number of notations show the number of shells, which identifies the period the element in situated in the periodic table.
The number at the end of the electronic Configuration identifies the group in which the element is situated.
What are some of the differences between Metals and Non-Metals
- Metals are alkaline oxides, while non-metals are acidic oxides
- Metals are good conductors of Electricity, while non-metals are poor conductors of electricity
- Metals are malleable, while non-metals are brittle
- Metals have a high melting and boiling Point, while non-metals have a low melting and boiling point.
- Metals are better conductors of heat than non-metals
- Metals are ductile, while non-metals are not.
- Metals form Positive ions, whereas non-metals tend to form negative ions.
- Metals can form ionic compounds, whereas non-metals can form both ionic and covalent compounds.
Why do elements in the same group have SIMILAR properties
Because they all have the same number of electrons in the outer-most shell.
Why do elements in Group 0 not react
Because Group 0 elements are inert because they have a full outer shell of electrons, meaning that they will not gain or loose any electrons
