Q

How do you Test For Hydrogen

A

By Directing a light splint towards the substance and then if it goes out with a squeaky pop, then it contains Hydrogen.

10
Q

What are some properties of Metal Oxides

A
  • They form Ionic Compounds
  • They are usually insoluble in water. But the ones that are soluble in water form an alkaline solution with OH- ions.
  • They are usually alkaline, which means that they react with acids to form salts.

Q

What are some properties of Non-Metal Oxides

A
  • They are covalent compounds
  • They are acidic oxides and react with alkalis/bases to form salts.
  • They are often soluble in water and react with it to form an acidic solution containing H+ ions

A

17
Q

What is the product when hydrogen burns in the air

A

Water

18
Q

What is the product when sulfur burns in the air

A

Sulfur dioxide

19
Q

What is the product when magnesium burns in the air

A

Magnesium Oxide.

20
Q

What are the 2 ways that can be used to produce carbon dioxide.

A

By reacting calcium Carbonate with dilute hydrochloric acid.

Carbon Dioxide can also be made by heating metal carbonates so that they split to give a metal oxide and carbon dioxide

21
Q

What does copper carbonate look like

A

Green Powder

22
Q

What does copper oxide look like

A

Black powder

23
Q

What is a Hydrocarbon

A

This is a molecule that contains hydrogen and carbon atoms only.

24
Q

How can Carbon Dioxide be formed by the thermal decomposition of Copper Carbonate

A

When copper carbonate is heated. It will breakdown through the process of thermal decomposition to produce copper oxide and carbon dioxide.

25
Q

What are the greenhouse gases

A
  1. Carbon Dioxide
  2. Methane
  3. Nitrous oxide
  4. CFC
26
Q

How does the greenhouse effect occur

A

When high energy UV radiation comes from the sun towards the earth through the atmosphere, it heats up the surface of the earth. This means that the Earth will also radiate the heat as IR radiation. This thermal energy then heats up carbon dioxide molecules that then give out heat energy in all directions, which warms up the atmosphere.

27
Q

What are some of the effects of climate change

A
  1. Polar ice caps melting
  2. Increase the seawater level.
  3. More extreme natural disasters
