The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is electrical conductivity?
If an element is capable of conducting electricity.
What are the oxides of metals?
metal oxides - they are basic
What are the oxides of non-metals?
acidic or neutral
What are metals?
elements that can conduct electricity and form basic oxides.
What are oxides?
Compounds that form with one or more oxygen atoms. (eg. CO2)
What are non-metals?
elements that don’t conduct electricity and form acidic/neutral oxides.
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
because they have the same number of valence electrons which determines and elements chemical behaviour.
What are valence electrons?
loose/unpaired electrons on the outermost shell
Why don’t the noble gases react?
they have a full outermost shell so they are stable and don’t need to bond (attractions/reactions)
What group are the noble gases in?
group 0
