Combustion Flashcards
What is the main use of hydrocarbons?
burning them (combustion) to make fuel. combustion reactions release lots of energy when burned with oxygen
What is complete combustion?
when a hydrocarbon reacts with enough oxygen to create carbon dioxide and water releasing loads of energy in the process
the hydrogen and carbon are being oxidised
What type of reaction is complete combustion?
exothermic
What is the word equation for combustion reactions?
hydrocarbon + oxygen -> carbon + water (+ energy)
you must balance these equations
What is incomplete combustion?
combustion when there isn’t enough oxygen available, with possible products of carbon monoxide, carbon, carbon dioxide and water
