Covalent Bonding Flashcards

1
Q

What is a simple molecular structure?

A

compound made of molecules. within each molecule are covalently bonded atoms, and between the molecules are weak forces of attraction

Q

Why do simple molecular structures have a low boiling point?

A

between the molecules are weak forces of attraction that can be easily overcome with little energy

Q

What happens to CO2 as it turns from solid to gas?

A

the molecules stay the same but the weak forces of attraction between them are broken

Q

Why do large molecules have higher boiling points?

A

with more mass there are more forces of attraction between the molecules. these forces although weak must be overcome for substance to boil. since larger molecules have more of these it takes more energy to overcome them the bigger they are
