The Periodic Table Flashcards
What does the group number tell you?
The number tells you the number of electrons it has in its outer shell.
Why are some elements in one group?
The elements in 1 group have the same chemical properties, which means that they react in a similar way.
What does the atomic number tell?
The atomic number of electrons each atom has.
When you look at an element in the periodic table where can you find the number of electrons?
The atomic number tells you how many electrons they are in the outer shell.
What is the electron shell rule?
The electron rule is:
1. First shell = max 2 electrons
2. Seconds Shell = max 8 electrons
3. Third Shell = max 8 electrons.
How do you work out the electronic configuration of an element?
First position is the number of electrons on the first outer shell.
Second position is the number of electrons on the second outer shell.
Third position is the number of electrons on the third outer shell.
What is the second method to work out the electronic configuration of an element?
You take the period of an element and then the number of an element.
Which side of table are the metals?
They are on the left side.
Which side of table are the non-metals?
They are on the right side.
What are the group 0 elements?
They are called noble gases.
What is the specificity of the noble gases?
The noble gases are inert, they don’t react because it takes a lot of energy to add or remove electrons.
What are the specificities of metals?
Metals are conductor of electricity, pass through easily.
What are the specificity of metal oxide?
Metal oxides are basic, they will neutralise acids, and dissolve form a solution with a PH > 7.
What are the specificities of non-metal oxides?
Non-metal oxide acidic, they will neutralise bases and when they dissolve in water they will form a solution with a PH < 7.
What are group 0 elements?
Noble Gasses : they are not reactive.
What is in the Periodic Table?
Elements/Atoms
What happens if a atoms losses an electron?
It becomes a positive ion/ cations.
