The Halogens Flashcards
What are Halogens?
Halogens are elements in Group 7 of the periodic table.
What happens when the atomic number increases?
As the atomic number of the halogens increases, the elements are more reactive and have a darker colour and a higher boiling point.
What are the properties of chlorine?
At room temperature, its a green gas and its boiling point is -34 degrees/c
What are the properties of bromine?
At room temperature, it’s a red-brown liquid with an orange vapour.
What are the properties of Iodine?
At room temperature, its a dark grey crystalline solid which give off a purple vapour when heated.
Why are Halogens less reactive as you go down group 7?
It get harder to attract the extra electron to fill the outer shell when its further away from the nucleus.
