The peptide bond Flashcards
What is a peptide bond?
1)The peptide bond is a covalent bond formed between an amino group from one amino acid and a carbonyl group from another amino acid
2)During peptide bond formation, water is released (condensation reaction)
General characeristics
1)It is a covalent bond
2)It consists of O, C, N and H atoms
Properties
1)It is flat or planar
2)Has double bond characteristics
-It is rigid. The bond cannot rotate freely around the C-N bond
3)It is polar. It can form hydrogen bonds with another peptide bond
Peptide
A chain of amino acids joined by peptide bonds
-Different amino acids may form peptide bonds and link up to form a sequence of amino acids residues
Oligopeptide
A short chain of amino acids (typically 2-20)
Polypeptide
A long chain of amino acids (typically more than 20)
Protein
One or more polypeptide chains that fold and form a 3-D structure
